Kindness

Kindness means to be honest and respectful to your class-mates, parents, siblings, teachers, family, etc. I have showed kindness to other people by:

  1. Giving money to the poor.
  2. Greeting everybody everyday.
  3. Saying "Thank You!" or "Your Welcome!"
  4. Giving my friend or my one of my family members a present when it's their birthday

Literature Circles-On my Honor

For Literature Circles, I chose "On My honor" because when I read the summary, I immeadetly wanted to find out more! Even though I am the only girl that was in the group, I didn't care. I hope it's a good book and I hope it has a happy ending! :)))

Exhibition!!!

The exhibition was amazing. It was incredible. It was magical. We were actually going to do this! At first I couldn't believe it! I was ready all this time?? But when I think back at the retreat to this point, I felt really proud of myself. This is a BIG chance to show all of the progress you've made pre-k till 5th grade and show what kind of 5th grader you are and how hard-working you've become. My favorite part of the exhibition was cooperating. I love to work in groups and it was easy and fun to cooperate with each other. The most challenging part for me during the exhibition journey was collaborating. We had a bit too many ideas and it was a diseaster thinking together. But we still managed to collaborate a little bit. The exhibition was perfect! Nothing could go wrong AT ALL!!!! My group members (Marijn and Richard) also did a good job in the Exhibition!

What I learned This Week

What I learned this week was:

Math: How to find an area of a triangle or a parellogram. I also learned what a base and height mean.

Reading: I learned lots of new words such as rigid or predicament!

Writing: I learned how to banish boring words and put commas, capitals, periods, etc.

P.Y.P.: I learned about my exhibition topic (orphans) and writing a freestyle poem.

That's really what I have learned!

Literature Circles- Hope Was Here

In literature circles, my book was called "Hope Was Here" by John Bauer. It wasn't my first choice but the minute I started to read it, I wanted to read more and more to find out! I had LOADS of questions, passages, connections, and words to show to my classmates. I really liked this book because its about how people live as cooks and waitresses and one of the main characters are Hope. She is the waitress. I'm going to find out more and more about her and see how the election goes!!!

Exhibition Mentors

In our exhibition, we have mentors to work with us! Our group mentors are Ms. Elena, Ms. Glid, and Ms. Suzanne.  Ms. Glid is our art teacher and Ms. Suzanne is I think the secretary of the school. I'm not so sure. But I don't know about Ms. Elena. I think she is the English teacher. Overall, they are really good teachers. I'm lucky to have them as my mentors!!!

Eleven and What To Wear

Both of the stories were sad. In What To Wear, I think the people were being very prejudice to the girl. I mean who cares if someone's wearing a frock. Anyone can wear anything. In Eleven, a girl whos 11th birthday was today got forced to wear someone else's dirty, holed red sweater. It was really sad because the teacher was being mean to her and couldn't she just admit that it's someone else's sweater! Both of the stories almost made me cry.

TSUNAMI IN JAPAN-DAY 8

I thought we were gonna die. I was getting used to the darkness and also the trembling. Not with fear. Just cold. My grand-daughter had a fever. I knew that because whenever she is sick, she starts getting as hot as the sun. We tried to call for help but we knew nobody could hear us. But we tried so hard, that we almost gave up. But then, we heard some funny noises. The noise kept on going and also growing louder and louder every hour. At afternoon, we felt the dirt shake. I thought it was another earthquake but after a few moments later, a hand stuck out! It looked as if it was a zombie but it was actually the construction guys. We were saved! We trembled with excitement and when we finally got out, My feet couldn't move! So they took me in a wheel chair. After a while, I could stand up. We all hugged so hard that you would almost pop your eyes out!

TSUNAMI IN JAPAN-DAY 4,5, AND 6

It was horrible. We didn't have time to blink. We didn't have time to breath! Everyday seemed weaker and worse by the minute. The only thing we did was eat the dirt or call my husband. We knew when it was morning or night. When the dirt is shining so much , it means it's morning. But when it gets so quiet and dark,it means its night. My grand-daughter was shivering a lot. I touched her face. Warm tears came out rapidly from her eyes. I comforted her that everything's going to be ok and that your father will come home soon and we'll be safe and sound. But I knew it was impossible.

TSUNAMI IN JAPAN-DAY 3

We grew weaker and weaker by the minute. She kept on saying "help"! But the more she shouted, the more she was losing her voice. When she finally stopped, she began to cry some more. Luckily, I remembered she always carries a cell-phone with her. I called my husband from her cell-phone. I stammered " where are you!!?? What happened? Are you okay!?". But all he said was to calm down and he was on his way. We spent the night there. Trembling with fear.

TSUNAMI IN JAPAN-DAY 2

She fell down to her knees. She cried and cried and cried. Her puppy died. And one of her friends died. I cried with her. Suddenly, my house broke apart some more. We got stuck! We couldn't move!!! In horror, she struggled and tried to wiggle free but she failed. She was breathing too hard. I told her to slow down. She did. 1 or 2 hours later, she started to ask me crazy questions. These are some she asked:
Are we gonna live?
What is happening to my mamma right now?
Will I be an orphan?
Will we be rescued?
We spent the night.Buried.

TSUNAMI IN JAPAN-DAY 1

On the 11th of March, my granddaughter's birthday. We were all having a wonderful time! She got a new video game, a play station of her own (because her older sister was not sharing properly), and a puppy of her own. Ever since she has heard about how helpful dogs are and how they can be your best friend, she kept pleading for one. At the middle of  her birthday/sleepover party, the ground started to shake. At first, she thought I was kidding. But then, she felt it herself. 30 seconds later, we all started to shake. All of us were screaming at the top of our voices. Our whole house shook and started to fall down, down, down.  2 minutes later, the earthquake stopped. As my grand-daughter looked around the house, she saw something. Something sad.

Student Led Conference :(

The S.L.C. went AWFUL!!! Oh! I'm just kidding! It was just O.K.!!! I mean it went well but I still expected something else. Something different. I don't know what it was that I would be "expecting" it to be. Although, it was very quiet. Ok. Back to topic. The S.L.C. went well and I showed my parents my portfolio and talk and discuss with them about the exhibition. I thought I was in charge of the WHOLE conference. Well, almost all of it. What I need to improve on is to get enough sleep EVERY day! It would take week! Or a month! I don't know how I will GET enough sleep! Okay, so now you would be thinking it was awful to talk to the teacher in front of your parents about how bad it is to not get enough sleep and chatting with your teacher at 10:00 pm and so on and so forth. But no! It wasn't as bad as you THINK it was! I actually got to clear out all the junk out of my brain that was stuck since Tr. 2!!! I mean I felt better. Well, it wasn't that bad after all. I had a fun time!

Report Card of Tr.#2

I think I could've done little better in listening skills and in P.E. but the rest were what I expected it to be. I think I was best at math, not to be too braggy. And I know I was good at art and unit of Inquiry in Trimester 1 and its the same result. ME. But overall, I improved a lot and I think, not to brag much about it, I will be ready for middle school at the end of Tr. #3. I mean everyone will. I just got to try as hard as I can. And succeed.

Exhibition Groups

For the exhibition, Mr. Moran and Mrs. J made the groups of the exhibition. I am with Marijn and Richard. We all picked to do a presentation about orphans for the exhibition. I think we will do really good and a HUGE succes!

What I learned This Week

What I learned this week was a loooooooooot of things. First I will start with math.

Math: In math, I learned how to add, subtract, and multiply fractions. We were basically learning about fractions and how to find a percentage or discount of a number. For example: $100.00. 50% discount. You need to find how many dollars would it be. It's $50.00.

Languages: I learned French in languages. I learned the basic things of French. For example, Bonjour! which means "hello!". Or, Ca va bien! which means "I feel good!"

eye  I have not only learned subjects, I have learned to also finish my homework in time and also time management .

I learned a loooot of things this week and it could fill up almost a page!

Our New Principle-Mr. Lettinga!

Reflection:

When I found out that our principle, Mr. Moynihan, was going to be replaced by Mr. Lettinga, I wasn't that surprised! I already knew that Eve, who is in 5B, was going. I was also very sad to hear that Mr. Moynihan is going. :( But I'm also looking forward to meet him. But I would be in middle school by the time he is the lower school. So that makes it double sad. :(( But I was really glad to meet him. He seemed very nice and fun and also in the assembly, he shared with all of us who, what, where, when, and why he came here. And don't forget how!

Exibition Retreat

On the 24th of February, Thursday, 2011, the 5th grade went to the exibition retreat. We were going to learn about the exibition and what we are going to do in the exibition. Since it was for 2 days, we will continue it on Friday. In the Field trip, I learned a lot of things about the exhibition. I learned that we will need to use a lot of teamwork because we are going to work in groups and need a lot of cooperation. I also learned that to make the exhibition successful, we would need facts and figures (signs), posters, etc. What I'm still wondering is if we can use laptops during our exhibition.

Experiment-Coin Lab

On the 3rd of February,Thursday,2011, we did an experiment. What you had to do in the experiment was to put how many drops you can on a penny or a 5-cent euro coin. Here is what we needed to do.

Part A:
Step 1: Rinse the coin and dry it completely.
Step 2: Place the coin on a dry towel.
Step 3: Use an eye dropper to place drops of water on the penny (one at a time) until ANY amount of water runs over the edge of the penny.
Step 4: Record the number of drops for that trial in the table.

There was also a part B.

Part B:
Step 1: Rinse the coin and dry it completely.
Step 2: Place the coin on paper towel.
Step 3: Hold the coin with the tweezers provided, then dip it into the testing liquid (water). Allow extra liquid to drip off the coin into the container before going to the next step.
Step 4: Place the coin on a dry spot on a paper towel. Place drops of water on the coin (one at a time) until ANY amount of water runs over the edge of the coin.

Part A:

Trial 1: 44 drops

Trial 2: 24 drops

Trial 3: 27 drops

Trial 4: 48 drops

Trial 5: 17 drops

Mean (average): 32

Part B was better than Part A.

Part B:

Trail 1: 61 drops

Trial 2: 56 drops

Trial 3: 201 drops

Trial 4: 72 drops

Trial 5: 32 drops

Mean (average): 100

What Is Balance? Do You Need Balance?

Balance means to keep balance of the things you do.

For example,
Suppose you are a academic student. You always get good grades and you are great at math, science, social studies, etc. And you have lots and lots of friends, you play skip rope, you can sew, you can cook, and you can do many other things. That would be an example of balanced.

I do not really know if I'm balanced. I have lots of friends, I play sports, and I have many talents such as dancing, reading, painting, etc.

But, I am also get good grades, finish my homework on time, read everyday, etc.

Sometimes I can focus on one or more things at a time!

Ads-5th Grade

On Thursday, the 19th of January, 2011 5A and 5B had to present their ads in front of 5th grade. The first one was Juicy Juice. It was by Lana, Nemke, and Max. They all did an ad about juice.

Juicy juice:

The actors did not speak clearly.

The music was too loud.

I could not understand what they were saying.

The logo was colorful.

I think Fizzy Rawr(from 5B) was the best because they not only make their own jingle but also tried to make it unique.

Reflection On Field Trip-Advertising (Mcann Ericksen)

On The 14th of January, 2011 we went on an advertising field trip. When we went in, the first thing that I saw was a lady who told us about advertising. There were many stairs in the agency. I wrote down in my P.Y.P. book '' many stairs''. It had soooo many stairs, I thought I was going to collapse! But, we made it through!!
She told us about what they do in the agency. There were many phones ringing. I thought that they were making logos and slogans in their computers. Then, we went on the second floor. We entered through a big room. They showed us a slide show about advertising and how they make advertising more interesting. I learned that advertising always needs color and also a catchy logo and slogan. I think it would make my advertising skills better!
